Natural medicine and dentistry

Sat, 5th Nov 2016

Dr. Robertson has recently attended a lecture series by Doctor Russell Vickers, a prominent oral surgeon, stem cell researcher and qualified herbalist. In addition to mainstream dental treatments and medication, he uses natural remedies and herbal preparations to assist patients with a number of chronic issues.

There is now a strong evidence base for the advantages and uses of natural remedies, which has been measured through western science.

In Dr. Vickers laboratory he uses a mass spectrometer so he can measure exactly what is in herbal formulations. The active ingredients are often flavonoids, which are found in a variety of fruits, vegetables and spices.

These ingredients such as Kaempferol and Quercetin have evolved in plants over millions of years to become defense mechanisms against viruses and bacterial pathogens. They have wide range of beneficial health affects, for example; Kaempferol is found in kale, tea and broccoli and is an antibiotic, anti inflammatory, anti diabetic and cardio protectant. He advises that the use of these flavonoids has a very low level of side effects and has shown beneficial effects.

After all, most of our traditional medicines originally herbal preparations with measured doses. Homeopathic medicines come in a variety of formulations; ointments, teas, infusion tinctures and fluid extracts.

The history of these natural medicines stretches back to ancient cultures and traditions. So its not exactly new, but its importance is becoming more widely accepted.

Dr Robertson continues to become further informed and involved in the growing body of research and practice surrounding natural, plant based medicine.

Dr. Robertson says, “It is certainly an interesting area, which will ultimately benefit our patients in the future.More and more this becoming a relevant feature in modern medicine and I think there are cases where it can be a viable addition to treatment”.
