Missing teeth and implants

Tue, 22nd Nov 2016

3,600,000,000 People in the world are missing teeth. An attractive, natural-looking smile is seen as a symbol of beauty and health, but it’s more than just a smile. Our teeth play an important part in our everyday lives, they allow us to enjoy the foods we love, feel confident within ourselves and allow us to laugh, smile and converse with confidence.

Losing or damaging a tooth can be a daunting and frightening experience. Did you know that over half of the world’s population is missing one or several teeth?

A missing tooth doesn’t just impact your smile! If you lose a tooth it has a wider effect on your surrounding teeth, the teeth are now left without support and can start to shift or even collapse. Teeth from the opposite jaw can begin to grow into the gap making it difficult or even impossible to replace the missing tooth in the future.

Missing teeth can also affect your appearance. The missing teeth and bone means that your mouth can no longer support you lips from the inside. The more teeth you lose, the more your face will change accordingly, making you look older and wrinklier! Your cheeks are left without the adequate support and begin to become hollow and saggy.

Missing teeth can have a spiralling effect on your life, people become self-conscious about gaps in their mouth leading to even further social issues as a consequence of your oral health.

Every tooth that is missing can have a negative impact on your quality of life, Therefore, it is important to find a long-lasting solution with your dentist.

So what can you do?

Dental implants are widely considered to be the most effective and successful method of tooth replacement today. Since the 1980s there has been a substantial rise in the use of implants in dentistry and Dr Robertson has been restoring implant crowns for patients since 1995.

So what is a dental implant?

Dental implants look and feel like real teeth! A dental implant works as the tooth root of your new tooth, only a few millimetres long, your dentist can firmly anchor it into your jaw bone just like your natural tooth, keeping it firm and stable. On top of your implant will be a prosthetic tooth, known as a ‘crown or bridge’. These are individually designed in a dental laboratory ensuring that it looks and feels like your real teeth.

What are the benefits?

A healthy natural smile – The implants are biocompatible with your body, they look and feel just like normal teeth. Also the colour, contour and shape of your new tooth is made to match your natural teeth.

Eat and speak normally – Implants give you full function of natural teeth, so whether your chewing on an apple or a lollypop your new teeth are going to be able to deal with anything a real tooth would.

Dentures, stable and comfortable – Dentures are fixed to your jaw, making them more stable and more comfortable than dentures.

Long lasting and proven solution – Implants are incredibly durable and with proper care and good oral hygiene they will last years or even a lifetime.

  • A healthy natural smile
  • Teeth that look and feel like your own
  • Biocompatible, meaning your body accepts them easily
  • Normal eating and speaking
  • Stable and comfortable fit
